‘Money Is Not Everything, Don’t Produce Works That Harm Nation And Religion’ – Mohd Izhar

Date:

Drama producers and actors have been urged to reflect on the social impact of their work instead of pursuing profits at the expense of the dignity of the nation and religion.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Faculty of Islamic Studies dean Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Izhar Ariff Mohd Kashim said those involved in the industry should consider how the content they produce could influence society, particularly younger generations.

He stressed that financial gain should not be the only consideration when producing entertainment, warning that repeated exposure to controversial behaviour could eventually make such conduct appear normal.

“Money is not everything. Today, we produce performances that bring shame to ourselves and Muslims. Believe it or not, one day our generation may become accustomed to the actions portrayed in these performances,” he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

He also asked producers and performers to consider whether they would want their own children to grow up adopting behaviours portrayed in certain productions.

“Imagine our own children becoming adulterers or being involved in what is described as a deviant culture such as homosexuality. I am sure no one wants that, including the actors themselves. God forbid,” he said.

Earlier, Mohd Izhar had shared posts about two local dramas, including one that had attracted considerable discussion on social media over concerns about content considered excessive.

He said such developments were certainly not something society should want to see among future generations.

Mohd Izhar subsequently called on producers and actors to take greater responsibility when creating entertainment, particularly when their work could influence public attitudes and behaviour.

He reminded those in the drama industry that creative freedom should also come with social responsibility.

“Therefore, do not produce works that harm the nation and religion,” he said.
