Monk Arrested With 201 Meth Pills After Villagers Report Erratic Behaviour

Date:

A 41-year-old monk has been arrested after police discovered 201 methamphetamine pills in his possession following reports of unusual behaviour in Buriram, Thailand.

The incident came to light on April 20, 2026, after villagers in Kaan Lueang Subdistrict, Nang Rong District alerted authorities about a monk acting erratically along a roadside. Responding officers from Nang Rong Police Station located the individual, identified as Phra Anuchit, who initially appeared calm and coherent.

However, a search of his belongings revealed a stash of 201 methamphetamine pills inside his bag. He was immediately detained and taken to the police station for further investigation.

During questioning, the monk admitted the drugs belonged to him and claimed they were for personal use. He told investigators he became addicted after discovering five meth pills during his travels between his home in Nang Rong and a temple in Nakhon Ratchasima, where he was ordained.

Despite his explanation, police expressed doubts over his claims, citing his previous imprisonment for drug-related offences. Investigators are exploring the possibility that he may have used his monk status as a cover to avoid suspicion while engaging in illegal activities.

Following the arrest, a senior monk carried out the formal process to disrobe him. Authorities have since charged him with possession of a Category 1 narcotic and drug use, with further legal action to follow under Thai law.
