A motorcyclist was killed after crashing into a lorry before his motorcycle caught fire at KM357 of the East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2) heading towards Kuantan here yesterday morning.
The victim, whose identity has yet to be established, was pronounced dead at the scene following the 5am incident.
Bandar Al-Muktafi Billah Shah Fire and Rescue Station operations commander PBK II Mohd Kamaruzaman Mohd Safii said the station received an emergency call at 5.09am.
“Upon arrival, we found that the accident involved a motorcycle and a lorry. A man believed to be the motorcyclist was found in the burning motorcycle,” he said.
Dungun district police chief Superintendent Nik Ab Halim Nik Mat confirmed that police had received a report regarding the incident.
He said preliminary investigations found that both vehicles had been travelling from Kuala Terengganu towards Kuantan before the crash occurred.
“The lorry is believed to have veered onto the road shoulder. At the same time, the motorcycle travelling behind failed to avoid the lorry and collided with it, causing the motorcycle to catch fire,” he said.
The 37-year-old lorry driver escaped unharmed in the incident.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, while efforts are being made to establish the identity of the deceased.
