A 41-year-old Myanmar national working as a cleaner was charged at the Sessions Court with allegedly offering RM1,400 to a police officer in exchange for not taking action against her and her friend.
Thu Zar Myint pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Sessions Court Judge Dazuki Ali.
According to the charge, the woman allegedly handed RM1,400 in cash to a police officer attached to the Gua Musang District Police Headquarters in April.
The money was allegedly offered as an inducement for the officer to refrain from taking action against Thu Zar Myint, who was suspected of not having valid identification documents, as well as her friend, who allegedly did not have a Malaysian entry stamp.
The charge was brought under Section 16(b)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.
If convicted, the offence carries a jail term of up to 20 years or a fine of five times the value of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Asmah Che Wan appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer S. Sathaiseelan.
The court denied bail and fixed September 13 for mention of the case.
The proceedings are now set to continue on the scheduled date as the prosecution moves forward with the case.
