Nani Roslan Denies Being Woman Detained With Nik Nazmi, Slams Baseless Claims

Date:

Presenter and influencer Nani Roslan has denied being the woman detained alongside former minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) last Thursday, saying she was forced to speak out after her name and images were linked to the controversy.

Nani said she was shocked by the speculation, which intensified after pictures and videos of her began circulating online in connection with the incident.

“I am not that woman. I never expected to have to come forward to explain this.

“However, when my name, pictures and videos began being linked to various speculations, I felt it was time to speak up,” she said in a video posted on Instagram yesterday.

She said the allegations had taken a disturbing turn, with some people directing obscene, insulting and degrading remarks at her based on unverified claims.

“I believe no woman deserves to be subjected to obscene comments, have her dignity undermined or be humiliated based on baseless speculation,” she said.

Nani also rejected allegations that she had been involved in a plan connected to the incident, describing the claims as completely untrue.

The presenter said her career had involved hosting programmes and events attended by people from different backgrounds, adding that her professional engagements should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any political party.

She claimed that even before the latest controversy, some parties had blocked her or withdrawn work opportunities at the last minute because they associated her professional commitments with certain political parties.

“I want to make it clear that doing my job does not mean I am promoting any particular party’s political views,” she said.

Nani further clarified that her stint as a podcast host alongside Nik Nazmi had ended on Sept 30, before the incident came to light.

While acknowledging that the public might be curious about the case, she urged social media users to exercise restraint and respect others rather than resorting to personal attacks.

“Freedom of speech is not a licence to defame others, which can have legal consequences,” she said.

Nik Nazmi, the former Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, confirmed yesterday that he was one of two people detained by Jais last Thursday.

The former PKR vice-president said the incident occurred while he was having a discussion with friends at a studio in Brickfields.

Following his admission, the Bersama co-founder was suspended from all official party activities for three months.
