National Day Provocation Suspect Tests Positive For Cannabis

Date:

A 30-year-old man detained over an alleged provocation incident during the National Day celebrations at Dataran Putrajaya on Monday has tested positive for THC, police said.

Putrajaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Aidi Sham Mohamed said the suspect turned himself in at the Putrajaya District Police Headquarters at about 12.15am on Sept 2.

Police have received five reports linked to the alleged incident, while statements from seven witnesses have been recorded to assist the investigation.

Aidi Sham said a urine screening carried out on the suspect returned positive for THC, a compound associated with cannabis.

The case is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which relates to drug consumption.

The suspect, who works as a cook, was previously detained in Putrajaya after five police reports were lodged against him following the incident.

Police had earlier recorded statements from seven individuals as part of efforts to establish what happened during the National Day celebrations.

The man was subsequently remanded for one day from Wednesday to facilitate investigations into the alleged provocation.

The case gained attention after several videos circulated online showing a man wearing a brown shirt allegedly provoking police officers who were on duty during the celebrations.

Aidi Sham said the remand application under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code was granted for one day.

He added that investigations were still ongoing as police worked to complete the investigation papers related to the incident.
