Newborn left inside mosque near donation box, say police

Date:

A baby boy has been found abandoned inside a mosque in Taman Daya here yesterday afternoon, in a case now under police investigation.

Johor Bahru Selatan District Police Chief ACP Raub Selamat said authorities received a report on the discovery from a 58-year-old local man who works as a driver at about 2.40pm.

The witness reportedly came across the infant while he was at the mosque to perform prayers around 12 noon, before alerting police at the Setia Indah station and Hospital Sultan Ismail for further action.

Preliminary investigations found that the suspect is believed to be a local man in his 20s who allegedly placed the baby near a donation box area inside the mosque compound.

Police said medical checks confirmed that the baby boy was in stable condition, healthy and not suffering from any injuries.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandoning a child.

Police are actively tracking down the suspect and have urged members of the public with information to come forward to assist investigations.

Anyone with relevant details can contact the Johor Bahru Selatan District Police Headquarters hotline at 07-2182323.
