Three non-permanent houses were destroyed in a fire at Kampung Melayu Batu 8 in Sandakan in the early hours of this morning.

However, the incident, which occurred at about 6.17am, did not involve any fatalities or injuries.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station chief Jimmy Lagung said his department received an emergency call via the MERS 999 line before deploying 13 firefighters and three fire engines to the scene.

He said the team arrived at about 6.30am, just 13 minutes after the distress call was received.

“Upon arrival, the operation commander reported that the fire involved three non-permanent houses measuring 20 x 30 feet, 20 x 30 feet and 10 x 15 feet respectively, which were completely destroyed,” he said in a statement.

He added that firefighting operations were carried out using one hose line with two jets extending 200 feet, supplied by water from fire engines.

The blaze was brought under control at 6.46am before the operation was fully concluded at 7.30am after checks confirmed the area was safe and no further hazards remained.

No casualties were reported in the incident, while the cause of the fire and total losses are still under investigation.
