The Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) carried out inspections involving more than 1,000 foreigners during Ops Mega in the Klang Sentral area today as part of efforts to curb the presence of undocumented migrants.
The surprise operation began at about noon and focused on shop lots, business premises and hostels identified as key locations for foreign communities’ accommodation and economic activities in Klang.
Checks conducted by enforcement officers involved verifying the travel documents of individuals inspected to determine whether they had breached the Immigration Act 1959/63, including overstaying offences and possession of invalid documents.
JIM also focused on identifying possible involvement of employers or third parties suspected of protecting undocumented migrants, involving nationals from countries including Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan and Indonesia.
The integrated operation uncovered several suspected illegal activities at some premises, including evidence of immoral activities and the sale of prohibited items at temporary accommodation units.
The large-scale enforcement effort involved 250 officers and personnel from JIM Putrajaya, JIM Selangor, the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) and the Selangor branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).
All individuals detained were taken to the Selangor Immigration Department office for further investigation. A detailed update on the operation will be provided by Immigration Department Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban during a press conference in Putrajaya tomorrow.
