Police have launched an investigation into a man suspected of impersonating a government officer by wearing what appeared to be an official security force uniform and using a backdrop resembling a government office.
Kajang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said a report regarding the incident was received at 6.58pm on Sunday, prompting an immediate investigation.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant.
“Members of the public with any information related to the case are urged to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Siti Aidah Yem, at 010-2176278 to assist with investigations,” he said in a statement on Monday.
Naazron warned the public not to fall victim to such tactics, which are believed to be used to deceive or scam people by pretending to be government officials.
He also urged anyone with information on criminal activities linked to the case to contact the MERS 999 emergency hotline or the Kajang District Police Control Centre at 03-89114243.
The case previously went viral on the Threads social media platform after images surfaced showing a man allegedly posing as a government officer, raising concerns over the misuse of official-looking uniforms and settings to mislead the public.
Authorities reminded the public to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent a government agency and to report suspicious individuals to the police immediately.
