A lorry attendant with two prior convictions was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to assaulting his wife using a rubber hose and a plastic clothes hanger.
Magistrate Ezrene Zakariah ordered that the jail term for the accused, 40-year-old Faisalrullah Omar Zuki, take effect from the date of his arrest.
Faisalrullah was charged with causing injuries to his wife, Nor Hasyimah Ahmad, at their home in Precinct 9 here between 6pm and 6.30pm on Nov 13. The offence was prosecuted under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means, read together with Section 326A, which enhances penalties for offences committed against family members.
Upon conviction, Section 324 carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine, whipping, or any combination of these punishments.
Deputy public prosecutor Faizah Khalilah Zaberi urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, stressing the seriousness of domestic violence and noting that the accused had inflicted severe injuries on the victim. She added that Faisalrullah’s two previous convictions also involved causing harm to others.
Defence counsel K Narandra appealed for leniency, requesting a fine instead of imprisonment on the grounds that the couple have five children, three of whom have special needs.
Nor Hasyimah, a customer service officer with a government agency, lodged a police report on the day of the incident, leading to her husband’s arrest. After a brief remand, Faisalrullah was charged and subsequently remanded in prison after failing to post bail.
