RM1 Tap & Pay Toilet in Alor Setar Leaves Netizens Stunned

Date:

Recently, visitors to the Alor Setar Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Kedah were surprised to find that using the public restroom now requires a card payment. The move has sparked heated discussions online.

Signage at the site states that a RM1 fee is required, payable only via Tap & Pay with a bank card—cash and QR code payments are not accepted.

Some netizens raised concerns that elderly people or those without bank cards could be excluded, urging authorities to at least provide alternative payment options.

The Kedah UTC explained that the new system supports the government’s push for cashless payments while improving toilet management, safety, and efficiency.

Photos shared on social media prompted reactions ranging from amusement to disbelief:

  • “Five-star toilet?”
  • “Even the restroom needs a card?”
  • “Not even TNG works…”
  • “High-tech indeed.”

While technology brings convenience, critics remind authorities to consider those who may struggle to keep up, advocating for multiple payment options to ensure public facilities remain accessible for everyone.
