Police Marine Force (PPM) Port Klang seized various electronic waste (e-waste) materials and processing equipment worth an estimated RM2.57 million during a raid at a factory in Teluk Panglima Garang recently.
The operation, conducted at about 10.30am, led to the arrest of a 42-year-old local man who claimed to be the factory caretaker to assist with investigations.
Region One Marine Police Commander Assistant Commissioner Jaffri Bidin said initial inspections found that the premises was believed to be involved in storing and processing electronic waste without the required documents and valid permits.
He said authorities discovered various used electronic items, copper cables, batteries, lift components, compression machines and scheduled waste believed to have been processed illegally at the factory.
During the raid, 14 foreign workers aged between 23 and 53 were also found at the premises and detained to assist with further investigations. The authorities are now examining the extent of the activities carried out at the location.
Jaffri said the investigation is being conducted under several provisions, including Sections 18, 19 and 34 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 under the Department of Environment (DOE), Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as the Kuala Langat Municipal Council’s Trade, Business and Industrial Licensing By-Laws.
He stressed that illegal e-waste processing activities not only violate the law but could also pose serious risks to the environment and public health if left unchecked. Authorities will continue monitoring and taking action against activities involving improper handling of scheduled waste.
