The Kedah Road Transport Department (JPJ) has impounded a Proton Saga after its driver, a Rohingya man from Myanmar, was found operating the vehicle without a valid driving licence during an enforcement operation in Taman Kempas, Alor Setar.
According to Kedah JPJ director Stien Van Lutam, the 34-year-old suspect failed to produce a driving licence when checked at around 8.30pm on Thursday.
Authorities said action was taken under Section 26 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving without a valid licence.
Investigations also revealed that the man is a holder of a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card and was driving after finishing work as a house contractor.
He was reportedly using a Proton Saga belonging to a local Malaysian citizen at the time of the incident.
Following the offence, the vehicle was seized and sent to the JPJ Vehicle Storage Depot in Alor Setar for further action.
JPJ stressed that it will not compromise on any road traffic violations, including driving without a valid licence.
The department also reminded the public to always comply with traffic laws and ensure valid driving licences and proper vehicle documentation before using the road.
