A 31-year-old Rohingya man allegedly told police he received what he described as an order from God for about a month before killing his friend with a machete in Kelantan.
The suspect, who worked with the 18-year-old victim, was arrested at a house in Pasir Mas yesterday, following the fatal attack at a workers’ quarters near a Muslim cemetery in Taman Desa Kujid, Kampung Pok Boh last Friday.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said preliminary investigations found that the suspect claimed he had received the alleged divine instruction before attacking the teenager.
“So far, we see that he appears to be hallucinating, but his condition and any issues he may be experiencing will have to be confirmed by specialists or doctors,” he told reporters after the Kelantan Contingent Police Headquarters monthly assembly today.
Mohd Yusoff said there was reportedly no argument or physical altercation between the suspect and victim before the attack.
The suspect allegedly waited for about a month after receiving the purported instruction before carrying out the killing last Friday.
A urine screening also found no traces of drugs in the suspect’s system.
Police are also investigating the authenticity of the suspect’s United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card, which they believe may be fake.
Mohd Yusoff said the card raised suspicion because the suspect’s date of birth was identical to that of two other individuals who were detained to assist investigations on Saturday, with only the year being different.
After the attack, the suspect allegedly fled to Pasir Mas, where he was subsequently arrested.
The victim had been found dead with injuries to his neck at around 10.30pm last Friday near a shed at a house under construction in Taman Desa Kujid, Kampung Panji.
The case was previously reported by Utusan Malaysia, which said the victim was discovered after residents were alerted to the incident.
A Kampung Panji resident, Najib Ahmad, 50, said he only learnt about the incident at around 7am after being informed by worshippers at a nearby surau.
