A 19-year-old Rohingya teenager was arrested after her alleged act of throwing a black plastic bag from a hotel room window in Bukit Indah led to the discovery of a newborn baby.
Iskandar Puteri District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner M Kumarasan said investigations found that the baby discovered inside the plastic bag near Taman Nusa Idaman on July 5 was believed to be the child of the female suspect.
He said the baby was reportedly born from the teenager’s relationship with her former boyfriend.
“The investigation found that the suspect gave birth to the baby inside the bathroom of a nearby hotel room before placing it in a black plastic bag.
“She then disposed of it by throwing the bag from the second floor of the hotel into the alley below, where the baby was later found,” he said in a statement on Friday.
Kumarasan said police first received information regarding the discovery at about 2.39am on July 5.
Following the report, a team from the Iskandar Puteri District Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Division detained a 34-year-old local man at the location where the baby was found, before arresting the teenager at a hotel in Bukit Indah at around 4am on the same day.
Both suspects tested negative for drugs following urine screening tests. Police checks also revealed that the male suspect had two previous records involving criminal and drug-related offences, while the teenager had no prior criminal record.
Kumarasan said the investigation papers were referred to the Johor Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office, which instructed that the teenager be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
The male suspect, meanwhile, was named as a prosecution witness.
He said the teenager was scheduled to be charged at the Johor Bahru Court on Friday.
Police also reminded the public not to act based on emotions and to avoid engaging in criminal activities, while urging anyone with information related to crime to contact the authorities.
