The haze situation in Malaysia is showing signs of gradual improvement, particularly in Sarawak, although Serian continued to record hazardous air quality as of 8am today.
Serian recorded an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 343, placing it in the hazardous category. Four other areas in Sarawak recorded very unhealthy readings, namely Sri Aman at 298, Kuching at 276, Samarahan at 257 and Sarikei at 227.
Several other parts of Sarawak also continued to experience unhealthy air quality. Sibu recorded an API of 191, followed by Bintulu and Kapit at 176 each, Mukah at 172, Samalaju at 167, Limbang at 155, the Miri Industrial Training Institute at 153 and Miri at 134.
Across East Malaysia, Labuan recorded an unhealthy API reading of 162, while several areas in Sabah also remained in the unhealthy range. The Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic recorded 166, followed by Kimanis and Keningau at 165 each, Kota Kinabalu at 164 and Tawau at 153.
Sandakan was an exception, with its air quality remaining at a moderate level with an API reading of 88.
In West Malaysia, three areas recorded good air quality — Kangar in Perlis and Tanah Merah in Kelantan both at 49, while Langkawi in Kedah also recorded 49.
Air quality across the Klang Valley was largely moderate but close to the unhealthy threshold. Batu Muda and Shah Alam recorded 98 each, followed by Cheras at 97, Putrajaya at 91 and Petaling Jaya at 88.
Johan Setia in Selangor was the only area in West Malaysia to record an unhealthy API reading.
Under the API classification, readings of 0 to 50 indicate good air quality, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy and readings above 300 are classified as hazardous.
