Sarawak Haze Worsens As 11 Areas Rank Among Malaysia’s Worst Air Quality

Sarawak continued to experience hazy conditions today, with 11 locations in the state ranking among the 15 areas recording the poorest air quality nationwide.

Serian remained in the “very unhealthy” category, recording an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 216 as of 3.30pm.

Meanwhile, 10 of the 14 locations nationwide with “unhealthy” air quality were also in Sarawak, with readings ranging from 151 to 184.

Samarahan recorded the highest reading in the unhealthy category at 184, followed by Kuching at 182 and Sri Aman at 181.

Other affected areas were Sibu (157), Sirikei (161), Samalaju (160), Bintulu and Mukah (155), Miri (152) and ILP Miri (151).

Outside Sarawak, the other three locations recording unhealthy air quality were Pasir Gudang, Johor, with an API reading of 138; Johan Setia, Selangor (108); and Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (102).

A total of 46 areas in the peninsula recorded moderate air quality, while eight areas were classified as having good air quality.

An API reading of zero to 50 indicates good air quality, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy, and readings above 300 hazardous.
