The operating arrangements for schools in Sarawak on Monday will be announced by the state Education Department (JPN) by 2pm tomorrow, as authorities continue to monitor worsening haze conditions.
JPN Sarawak said the announcement on school operations for Sept 7 would be made after taking into account the latest haze situation.
It said the Education Ministry (MOE) and JPN Sarawak remained committed to prioritising the safety, health and wellbeing of students and all education personnel.
“The operating arrangements for schools on Sept 7, 2026 (Monday) will be announced on Saturday, Sept 5, before 2pm,” it said in a Facebook post today.
Until then, parents and guardians, students and school staff have been urged to follow official announcements and instructions issued by the MOE and JPN Sarawak.
JPN Sarawak also advised parents and guardians to monitor their own health and that of their children, particularly those with respiratory-related health problems.
The public has also been advised to reduce outdoor activities and exposure to haze if air quality deteriorates further.
“Ensure the health and safety needs of children are always given attention and do not spread or believe unverified information, as this could cause confusion and anxiety,” it said.
JPN Sarawak also urged the public not to make assumptions about the status of school operations before an official announcement is made.
Parents and school communities were reminded to wait for the official notification and comply with any instructions issued by the authorities.
The department said it hoped the haze situation would gradually improve, stressing that the safety and health of everyone remained the priority.
Earlier, air quality in Serian remained at a hazardous level, with the Air Pollutant Index (API) at the district’s police headquarters reaching 518 this morning.
According to the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), Kuching also recorded a hazardous API reading of 310.
Two other areas in Sarawak recorded very unhealthy readings, with Samarahan at 281 and Sri Aman at 245.
Meanwhile, 10 locations recorded unhealthy air quality readings, including six areas in Sarawak: Sarikei at 181, Sibu at 177, Mukah at 173, Bintulu at 157, Samalaju at 152 and the Industrial Training Institute (ILP) in Miri at 116.
