An elderly woman whose home was destroyed in a fire was left stunned after several copies of the Quran kept inside a cupboard were found intact at Perumahan Teluk Pasu here on Monday.
The fire, which broke out at about 7.10pm, caused Nafisah Endon, 72, losses estimated at more than RM300,000 after her belongings, including cash, jewellery and a sewing machine she used to earn a living, were destroyed.
Nafisah said she was in the bathroom when she smelled thick smoke and immediately rushed out of the house to save herself.
“The fire, which started in one of the rooms, was already raging and I did not have time to save anything. However, we were shocked to find that the copies of the Quran kept inside a cupboard were completely untouched,” she said when met at Perumahan Teluk Pasu yesterday.
The blaze destroyed her terrace house and also damaged part of the roofs of two neighbouring houses.
Nafisah said she found the discovery remarkable as the cupboard containing the Quran and other belongings had been destroyed by the fire.
She said she regarded the survival of the holy books as a sign of Allah’s power and greatness.
Her daughter, Nurul Hasni Ahmad, 34, said she panicked when she returned home after taking her two children to play at a nearby playground and saw the house engulfed in flames.
“Thankfully, my mother managed to get out safely. The fire was intense and spread to the neighbouring houses about 10 minutes later.
“Our family was shocked that the only belongings left untouched were the copies of the Quran,” she said.
