SG Husband Breaks Wife’s Bones During Argument over Finances

Date:

A 40-year-old man in Singapore has been sentenced to 23 months and two weeks in jail, as well as two strokes of the cane, after violently attacking his wife during a dispute over condominium sale proceeds. Au Yong Khin Mun pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing grievous hurt to his wife, who suffered multiple fractures, including a broken left clavicle, ribs, and bones around her eyes.

The incident occurred on December 2, 2024, while the couple were having breakfast at a canteen at the Singapore University of Technology and Design in Changi, after dropping their four-year-old twin daughters at school. Au Yong suggested using part of the proceeds from a condominium sale to pay off his credit card bills, but his wife disagreed, saying the money should go toward purchasing a Housing Board (HDB) flat so the family could live independently.

Angered by her refusal, Au Yong first attempted to slap his wife across the table, then struck her back and head several times. When she turned to leave, he attacked her with an iced coffee cup, a plate of food, his hands, and even kneed her in the back. He ended the assault by grabbing her arms from behind and throwing her to the ground.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Suriya Prakash described Au Yong’s actions as “especially cowardly” because he waited for his wife’s back to be turned before striking. The court also noted that divorce proceedings were underway at the time of the assault. The court ultimately sentenced Au Yong to 23 months and two weeks’ imprisonment and two strokes of the cane.
