Failure to safeguard the integrity and courage of whistleblowers could create fear among honest officers, preventing them from coming forward to expose abuse of power and misconduct.
Former High Court judge Datuk Syed Ahmad Idid Syed Abdullah said efforts to suppress or intimidate whistleblowers, instead of properly investigating corruption allegations, could expose a country to greater financial scandals and criminal risks in the future.
He said individuals who reveal wrongdoing should not be viewed as making false accusations, but rather as taking necessary action to stop corruption and address problems that threaten organisations and workplaces.
“When you stop whistleblowers, you are ensuring that no honest individuals within an organisation will have the courage to speak up when crimes occur.
“Revealing misconduct is not an act of defamation. It is a responsible action aimed at stopping corruption and resolving issues that pose a threat in the workplace,” he said during the dialogue session titled The Life, Conscience and Costs of the Principled at the second Wisdom Malaysia 2026 Conference.
Syed Ahmad Idid also highlighted the potential benefits of recovering funds lost through corruption and leakages, saying the money could be redirected towards major public infrastructure projects that would benefit Malaysians.
He said recovered funds could potentially finance the construction of at least two public hospitals in every state, as well as between 20 and 50 higher-quality schools nationwide.
“With these funds, we can provide better facilities, improve school equipment and offer stronger training for teachers to raise Malaysia’s education system to world-class standards.
“A strong education system will not only produce excellent human capital but also help develop better security personnel and national athletes,” he said.
The former judge urged all parties not to take corruption lightly or interpret the issue based on personal interests, stressing that society must uphold justice and integrity to protect the nation’s future.
The conference, organised by Kerjaya One PLT, served as a platform for current and former industry figures to share knowledge, experiences and perspectives with leaders and professionals.
