A 16-year-old male patient was seriously injured after the ambulance he was travelling in was involved in a road accident along Jalan Jerteh–Pasir Akar near Kampung Cherang Meliling, Besut, yesterday.
The incident occurred at about 5pm and involved three vehicles, including the ambulance which was transporting two patients to Besut Hospital.
Besut district police chief Mohd Rozaime Ab Rahim confirmed the incident and said initial investigations found that the ambulance had earlier picked up the two patients from Pasir Akar following another accident.
According to police, the collision happened when a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) allegedly emerged from the roadside shoulder, resulting in impact with the ambulance.
The ambulance then lost control, veered off to the left shoulder of the road, and subsequently crashed into a parked car, causing the vehicle to fall into a drain.
As a result of the accident, the 16-year-old patient sustained severe injuries while the second patient suffered minor injuries.
Both victims were rushed to Besut Hospital for further treatment. Other individuals involved in the incident were not injured.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Police have also reminded road users to comply with traffic regulations and give way to emergency vehicles at all times.
