A thick blanket of fog covered Sibu town this morning, significantly reducing visibility and affecting travel conditions in several areas.
Safety-conscious motorists were seen switching on their vehicle headlights while driving, as parts of the Rajang River were almost completely covered by the dense fog.
Despite the weather conditions, air quality in Sibu remained at a moderate level, with the Air Pollutant Index (API) recorded at 57 as of 8am.
Meanwhile, Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapa’ee said his flight from Kuching was unable to land at Sibu Airport due to low cloud cover and heavy fog.
He said the aircraft made two attempts to land before being forced to return to Kuching Airport, although passengers were not allowed to disembark immediately.
“That was the first time I had a meal on board an aircraft after it had already landed,” he said in a Facebook post.
The Nangka assemblyman was scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the 2026 International Symposium on Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies at Hotel Kingwood, Sibu.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the weather conditions as the fog affects visibility in the area.
