Two Arrested Over Drone Attempt To Smuggle Tobacco Into Sungai Udang Prison

Date:

Police have arrested a man and a woman believed to be involved in an attempt to smuggle prohibited items into Sungai Udang Prison using a drone during a raid at Taman Kris Satria, Sungai Udang, on Wednesday.

Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said officers received a report on the incident at about 3.10pm before raiding a house in the area at around 4pm on the same day.

The operation resulted in the arrest of a 46-year-old local man and a 27-year-old local woman.

Police also seized various items believed to be linked to the smuggling attempt, including drone equipment, suspected contraband, communication devices and several other items to assist investigations.

Checks revealed that the male suspect has 12 previous criminal records and three drug-related offences, while the female suspect has no prior criminal record.

Both suspects tested negative for drugs following urine screening.

Initial investigations found that the male suspect admitted to flying the drone to survey a suitable landing location before attempting to smuggle tobacco to an inmate at Sungai Udang Prison.

Police believe the operation was carried out with the assistance of an inmate, and efforts are ongoing in collaboration with prison authorities to locate the individual involved.

Both suspects have been remanded to assist investigations under Section 447 of the Penal Code and Section 58 of the Prison Act 1995.

Dzulkhairi said Melaka police view the misuse of drones for criminal activities, particularly attempts to smuggle prohibited items into prisons, as a serious offence and warned that firm action would be taken against those involved.

Members of the public with information related to the case are urged to contact the nearest police station or the Melaka Police Hotline at 06-2851999 to assist investigations.
