Two women were injured after a Health Ministry (KKM) ambulance skidded and crashed into two vehicles at a three-way junction in Kampung Neting, Jalan Kota Bharu-Pengkalan Kubor, Tumpat, on Thursday.
Tumpat district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Khairi Shafie said the crash occurred at about 1.15pm when the Toyota Hiace ambulance was travelling from Kelaboran towards Pengkalan Kubor.
He said preliminary investigations found that the ambulance was believed to have suffered a brake system failure while negotiating a bend near the scene, causing the driver to lose control.
The ambulance then crashed into a Proton Waja and a Perodua Viva travelling from the Kota Bharu direction.
“The Proton Waja driver, a 33-year-old woman, suffered bleeding to the head, while the Perodua Viva driver, a 29-year-old Malay woman, sustained an injury to her left knee.
“Both victims were taken to Tumpat Hospital for further treatment,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
Mohd Khairi said the 43-year-old local male ambulance driver was not injured and tested negative for drugs.
He added that police were continuing their investigation into the crash.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Mohd Khairi also advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and properly maintained to prevent similar incidents.
