Two teenage boys, aged 13 and 14, have been arrested for allegedly being involved in a series of vehicle vandalism cases involving smashed car windows in several areas around Gerik on Friday.
Gerik District Police Chief Superintendent Abdul Samad Othman said police received a report at about 2.38pm regarding the incidents that occurred at Taman Sri Temenggor, Taman Meha and Taman Gerik.
He said investigations found that eight vehicles of various types were damaged, resulting in estimated losses of about RM10,000.
“Based on information gathered, police managed to arrest both local suspects on Saturday morning, less than 24 hours after receiving the report.
“Initial questioning found that they admitted to being involved in the incident together with two other friends who are still at large,” he said in a statement.
Police believe the suspects used stones and bricks to smash the windows of the vehicles. Several items believed to be linked to the case, including a motorcycle, helmet and clothing worn during the incident, were also seized to assist investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief.
Abdul Samad advised parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s movements and activities to prevent them from becoming involved in criminal behaviour.
He added that parents could also face legal consequences if their children are found involved in offences, truancy or actions that disturb public order, including bullying and vandalism due to negligence in supervision.
Members of the public with information related to the case have been urged to contact the police to assist investigations.
Earlier, several images showing damaged vehicles, including broken rear and side windows, went viral on social media. A closed-circuit television (CCTV) recording also showed a motorcyclist allegedly throwing an object believed to be a stone at a vehicle.
