Confusion over the angle of a viral video is believed to have sparked claims that a police patrol car was escorting a vehicle allegedly carrying stolen cables in Kampung Tasek Tambahan, Ampang.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said checks found no controversy surrounding the incident, explaining that the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) team was carrying out its duties after receiving information about a cable theft.
Police also arrested a suspect in connection with the case, who was later charged and fined under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
“It is only the angles shown in the recording that, in my view, appear to have created the impression of controversy. Clearly, there was no controversy,” he told a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters today.
Shazeli said checks also found that the suspect who had been charged had a previous criminal record and had been active since early this year.
Police are now tracking down other suspects, including to determine whether they were part of a group that had previously been sought by authorities.
He also did not rule out the possibility of police recording a statement from the homeowner in connection with the incident.
Shazeli said police welcomed recordings and information shared by members of the public as they could assist investigations.
“We appreciate the sharing of information such as the recording. However, we need to establish its authenticity and ensure it has not been manipulated. We are not stopping people from sharing the recording because it is part of information-sharing. My advice is simply not to jump to conclusions,” he said.
He stressed that the authenticity of any recording must first be verified to prevent premature conclusions that could result in allegations against any party.
Previously, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation and Community Safety Department director Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin denied claims circulating online that a police MPV had escorted a vehicle believed to be carrying stolen cables in Kampung Tasek Tambahan, Ampang, last Saturday.
