A warehouse worker suffered multiple injuries after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of men when he confronted a drunken individual who was kicking a shop shutter in Keningau on Saturday night.
The incident, which occurred at around 10pm, left the 22-year-old victim with bruises on his face, a bleeding nose and pain across several parts of his body.
Keningau District Police Chief Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai said police received a report from the victim shortly after the incident and launched an investigation into the case.
Initial investigations revealed that a disagreement had earlier broken out between the suspect and one of his own friends while they were at a bar. At the time of the incident, the victim was preparing to close the premises for the night.
According to police, the intoxicated suspect later left the bar and began kicking and punching the shop’s shutter door. When the warehouse worker stepped in and advised the man to stop, the situation quickly escalated.
Instead of backing down, the suspect allegedly became aggressive and verbally lashed out at the victim before three other men joined in and physically attacked him. Incidents involving alcohol-fuelled violence continue to raise concerns over public safety, particularly in busy commercial areas during late-night hours.
The victim’s colleague, who witnessed the assault, reportedly retaliated by attacking one of the suspect’s friends who failed to escape the scene during the commotion.
As a result of the attack, the victim suffered pain at the back of his head and body, a swollen face, and bleeding from his nose. He later lodged a police report seeking action against those involved.
Police have since arrested two suspects, aged 29 and 18, who admitted their involvement in the incident. However, another individual believed to be linked to the assault remains at large.
The two suspects have been remanded for four days beginning Tuesday to assist investigations. The case is being investigated under Sections 324 and 160 of the Penal Code.
