Water Supply Disruption Expected in Several Areas from August 13-14 for Jalan Matang-Batu Kawa

Date:

Consumers in several areas are expected to experience low water pressure or temporary water supply disruptions from 9 pm on August 13 to 8 am on August 14 due to pipeline repair works along Jalan Matang-Batu Kawa.

Affected locations include Jalan Matang (from Kubah Ria to Mile 9), Taman Sri Harmoni, Jalan Sungai Tengah, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub, Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin, Jalan Demak, Jalan Bako, Muara Tebas, Petra Jaya, and surrounding JBALB areas.

Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (SWSB) Southern Region Office reported that a 750mm diameter Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pumping main along Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa, near Emart Moyan, suffered its first-ever burst on August 6. This incident affected treated water supply to Batu Kawa, Moyan, Jalan Batu Kawa-Malihah, Matang Jaya, Petra Jaya, Demak Laut, JBALB Semariang, and nearby areas.

SWSB acted swiftly to isolate the leak, preventing further damage to the road, underground utilities, and infrastructure. Repair works were completed ahead of schedule on August 7, followed by immediate flushing to restore clean water supply to the affected areas.

However, unscheduled repairs on a larger 1100mm diameter MSCL pumping main, previously halted on August 6 due to technical and site challenges, are set to resume soon. The pipeline was dislocated, and welding was done on about three-quarters of its circumference, but persistent leakage at the bottom section requires full rectification.

To reduce delays, SWSB has locally fabricated necessary fittings and is addressing the issues on-site. These pumping mains feed directly into the Bukit Siol reservoir. Water levels at Bukit Siol, Datu Muda, Pending, and Mile 9 3/4 reservoirs are being increased to ensure steady water pressure during repairs.

SWSB will also deploy water tankers to affected areas and advises consumers to store enough water before the repair period. The company assures that all efforts are being made to minimise disruptions and restore stable water supply, thanking consumers for their understanding and patience during this time.
