A 46-year-old Chinese woman was allegedly cheated out of RM11,661 after falling for a scam promising to obtain a driving licence without attending lessons or sitting for a test.
The victim, an analyst, reportedly came across a Facebook advertisement on October 10 offering driving licences without the usual requirements. She contacted a Chinese man through the phone number provided in the advertisement.
The man allegedly claimed that the entire process would cost just RM1,830, with the licence supposedly ready without any driving lessons or examinations.
Believing the offer, the woman transferred the full amount into a designated bank account in three transactions between October 10 and 12.
However, at around 3pm on October 12, another Chinese man claiming to be responsible for collecting the licence contacted her and demanded a deposit before it could be released.
The victim subsequently transferred a further RM9,831 into the designated accounts on October 12 and October 16.
She became suspicious when the alleged intermediary continued demanding more money and eventually lodged a police report.
Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat confirmed the case to China Press, saying it was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
