US President Donald Trump has launched another verbal attack on Norway, calling it a “shithole country” and declaring that Norwegian immigrants are unwelcome in the United States because he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump made the remarks during a political rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, ahead of next week’s US midterm elections.
While discussing immigration and recent unrest in France, Trump said the US would welcome immigrants from certain countries but not Norway.
“Because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize … So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” he said.
Trump also described Norway as a “shithole country”, using a derogatory term he has previously applied to Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.
However, there was no indication that his comments represented a change in official US immigration policy towards Norwegian nationals.
Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Earlier this month, he described Norway’s failure to award him the prize as an “indelible stain” on the country.
Norway remains one of the world’s wealthiest nations in terms of gross domestic product per capita, according to International Monetary Fund data.
Its sovereign wealth fund also recorded a profit of 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns (US$184.3 billion) in the first half of 2026.
Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a representative of the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular office hours.
