Woman Expressed Interest In Driving Bus Before Viral Lap Steering Incident

Date:

A woman’s desire to experience driving a bus has landed her and her partner in police custody after a viral video showed her sitting on the driver’s lap while the vehicle was in motion.

Jasin District Police Chief Lee Robert revealed that the couple had only known each other for about five months. The 21-year-old woman is understood to be working as a clerk at a bus ticket counter for a separate company.

According to police, the woman had expressed interest in driving a bus, prompting the 36-year-old driver to allow her to briefly handle the steering wheel while the bus was exiting Bemban along the North-South Expressway heading south. The incident has raised serious concerns over passenger safety and road discipline.

Authorities stressed that such reckless behaviour could compromise vehicle control and endanger not only passengers but also other road users. The case highlights the ongoing issue of negligence and poor judgment among commercial drivers, especially when safety protocols are ignored.

Both individuals were detained after appearing at the Jasin District Police Headquarters for approximately two hours to provide statements on Wednesday. Police are expected to apply for a remand order against them on Thursday as investigations continue.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Earlier, the pair arrived at the police station around 4.30pm in a Proton Persona, both wearing face masks, with the driver also seen in a cap.

The video, which circulated widely on Facebook, allegedly showed the express bus travelling from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) to Kulai, Johor at the time of the incident. Following the backlash, bus operator Sri Maju Group reportedly terminated the driver’s services, while the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has also recorded his statement for further action.
