A woman was injured after the sports utility vehicle (SUV) she was driving allegedly lost control before crashing into the entrance of the departure hall on Level 3 of Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) this afternoon.
The incident occurred at about 4.20pm, causing the glass doors at the entrance area to shatter, with fragments scattered along the passenger walkway and causing panic among members of the public at the scene.
Initial information suggested that the driver may have accidentally stepped on the accelerator, causing the vehicle to surge forward and crash into the airport departure area.
However, no visitors or airport staff were involved in the incident, and no other injuries were reported.
The female driver sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital for further treatment.
Several videos circulating on social media showed a white SUV with severe damage to its front section after crashing into the terminal structure, while broken glass could be seen scattered around the affected area.
Kota Kinabalu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrudin Mat Husain confirmed the incident and said further investigations were being carried out to determine the actual cause of the crash.
