Date:

A woman was killed while her daughter and niece were injured after the motorcycle they were travelling on was involved in a collision at KM123 of the Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan Road near Kemasik town on Monday.

Kemaman district police chief Superintendent Mohd Razi Rosli said the victim, Mariana Mat Hassan, 47, died at the scene after suffering severe head injuries in the accident, which occurred at about 1.40pm.

He said Mariana’s 10-year-old daughter, Tuan Nur Aina Syifa Tuan Ab Rahman, suffered fractures to her left arm and leg, while her seven-year-old niece, Nur Alfira Miqaila Mohd Hilmi, sustained injuries to her left arm and leg.

“Initial investigations found that the victim was riding a Honda Beat motorcycle and was believed to be heading home to Kampung Gong Cengal, Kemasik, after picking up her daughter and niece from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kemasik.

“The victim is believed to have been riding against the flow of traffic before colliding with the front left side of a lorry travelling along the left lane,” he said when contacted.

The 40-year-old lorry driver from Kampung Baru Seri Aman, Johor Bahru, escaped unhurt.

Mohd Razi said both children were taken to Kemaman Hospital for treatment, while the victim’s body was sent to the hospital’s forensic unit.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
