Woman To Face Court Over Alleged RM1.7 Million Kutu Scam

Date:

A 36-year-old woman detained over an alleged money-lending or “kutu” scheme is expected to be charged at the Alor Setar Sessions Court today for allegedly cheating her victims.

The woman was detained after police received 35 reports from individuals aged between 23 and 53 who claimed to have suffered losses. The total losses reported so far are estimated at RM1.7 million.

Kubang Pasu district police chief Superintendent Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim said the suspect had initially been remanded for four days from last Thursday before her remand was extended by another two days.

He said the woman’s 39-year-old husband would be called as a witness in the case, while she would face the charge at the Alor Setar Sessions Court.

The case came to light after the couple and their nine-year-old son were reported missing since July 20 after leaving their home in Taman Desa Bayanmas, Bukit Kayu Hitam.

The woman’s 62-year-old father subsequently lodged a police report at the Bukit Kayu Hitam police station last Monday after he was unable to contact his daughter, son-in-law and grandson.

The couple later turned themselves in at the Kubang Pasu district police headquarters at about 1.50am last Thursday.

They were subsequently remanded for six days to assist investigations under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which covers cheating.

Police are continuing to investigate the allegations and the full extent of the reported financial losses involving the victims.
