4.0 CGPA STPM Topper Denied UM Place, Party-Linked Universities Offer Full Scholarship

Date:

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) have offered a full scholarship to Edward Wong, the top STPM scorer who missed out on a spot in Universiti Malaya’s accountancy program through the government’s UPU (Unit Pusat Universiti) pathway.

However, MCA president Wee Ka Siong emphasized that the scholarship from institutions linked to his party should not be seen as a solution to the underlying issue in Wong’s case.

Wee explained that Wong, who achieved a perfect 4.0 CGPA and 99.9% in co-curricular points, believes he is entitled to a place in the nation’s top public universities.

“He feels this is his constitutional right. With results like his, he should be eligible to enter the best university in the country. Why shouldn’t he fight for his rights? I respect that,” he said at a press conference today.

Wee also warned that Malaysia risks losing top talent, as Wong may receive offers from universities abroad.

“At any time, he’ll get more offers. But are we willing to see countries like Singapore attract these bright students? I don’t think that is the way forward,” he added.
