AirBorneo To Launch Flights Linking East Malaysia With Peninsula This Year

Date:

Sarawak-based airline AirBorneo plans to launch flights connecting East Malaysia with Peninsular Malaysia as early as this year, with regional Southeast Asian routes expected to follow in 2027.

Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the airline’s expansion would occur in phases, depending on fleet availability, regulatory approvals, and board consent.

“At this stage, AirBorneo operates within Sarawak, Sabah, and Labuan, continuing the rural air services previously provided by MASwings,” he said at a press conference in Kuching.

“Once larger aircraft are added, priority will be given to connecting Sabah and Sarawak with Peninsular Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur.”

Karim noted that the airline currently operates eight ATR and six Twin Otter aircraft, suitable for rural and short-haul services but not for longer routes. “Over the next year, at least three jet aircraft are planned, pending board approval and aircraft availability,” he added.

AirBorneo could begin serving regional destinations such as Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines from 2027, before considering further expansion in subsequent phases.

Karim said the airline is being positioned as strategic infrastructure for Sarawak, similar to government-backed carriers like Qatar Airways in Qatar and Emirates in Dubai, with success measured by economic and tourism impact rather than profitability alone.

AirBorneo CEO Megat Ardian Wira Mohd Aminuddin said the airline is finalising its network and fleet plans for phased board approval.

“Ultimately, the fleet will support these networks. Our priorities are to serve the community, enhance regional connectivity, and build a resilient and sustainable airline with Sarawak at its core,” he said.

He added that further engagement with the public will follow once plans are finalised and approved.
