Anwar Admits Weakness: Govt Communication ‘Not Strong Enough’

Date:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised the need to further strengthen the government’s communication machinery, acknowledging shortcomings in how policies and decisions are conveyed to the public.

Speaking at a briefing with editors-in-chief from local and international media, Anwar said he had reminded Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil of the importance of improving government communication, noting that it remains a key area of criticism.

“We need courage and, of course, effective communication. One of the main criticisms is that our communication team is not strong enough,” he said, adding that while the government strives to perform at its best, it also faces limitations and occasional mistakes.

The session was attended by Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, and 92 local and international media representatives.

Anwar said the media could play a constructive role in advising the government on improving communication, stressing that the aim was not propaganda but transparency.

“This is not about propaganda. It is about explaining what is truly at stake for the country — what we are doing, as well as our limitations and what we have yet to accomplish,” he said.

He added that strengthening communication was not solely about electoral considerations but was crucial to maintaining national cohesion and trust between the government and the people.

“It is about the fabric of this nation. If you want to be a national party working with the people, you must be able to communicate effectively,” he said.

Separately, Anwar highlighted the importance of Malaysians of all races improving their proficiency and command of the Malay language.
