Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has voiced his disagreement with Umno’s decision to pay Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s RM50 million fine, saying the move should not create the impression that corruption involving billions of ringgit can be overlooked.
However, he acknowledged that the party had the right to make its own decision.
“If Umno wants to pay RM50 million, that is its decision. That is their business,” he told reporters after Friday prayers.
“Personally, I disagree because while we maintain a spirit of friendship (with Datuk Seri Najib and Umno), it should not give the impression that corruption involving billions of ringgit can simply be overlooked,” he said.
The payment of Najib’s RM50 million fine paves the way for the former prime minister to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.
Earlier today, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed that the party had settled Najib’s RM50 million fine at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
