The death toll from a landslide that struck Pengshui County in Chongqing, southwestern China, has risen to 41 after rescuers recovered the bodies of 30 more victims, local authorities said.
The landslide occurred on July 17, sending tonnes of rocks and earth crashing down a mountainside and burying several homes and buildings along a riverside community.
Footage released by Chinese state media showed a massive debris field covering residential and commercial areas, while hundreds of rescue workers searched the site for survivors.
Earlier rescue efforts found 11 bodies, while around 50 people were initially reported missing. Authorities had previously said there were no signs of life as search operations continued.
Late on Tuesday, officials announced that DNA testing and forensic identification had confirmed the identities of 30 additional victims, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to 41.
The latest tragedy comes less than two weeks after another deadly landslide in Gansu province, northwestern China, where 21 people were killed after dozens were buried under mud and debris.
