Chinese President Xi Jinping May Visit Malaysia for ASEAN Summit Alongside US President Donald Trump

Date:

Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has indicated that Chinese President Xi Jinping may visit Malaysia in October for the upcoming ASEAN Summit, where he is expected to attend alongside United States President Donald Trump.

Speaking to reporters, Mohamad described Xi’s visit as “a possibility,” echoing earlier remarks by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hinting at this development.

Mohamad made the comments after attending the 58th ASEAN Day celebration, where Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was also present, along with Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr. Johari Abdul, and several ASEAN ambassadors.

Regarding preparations for the ASEAN Summit, Mohamad shared that Malaysia is working closely with Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia to ensure smooth leadership continuity within the bloc.

“In the past, countries went individually, but I believe in inclusivity — so we included the Philippines as well since they will chair ASEAN in 2026,” he said. “We want continuity so the next Chair understands what needs to be done, ensuring nothing is left disconnected. We will follow through on promises already made, including efforts to extend and expand the ceasefire.”

Last month, Prime Minister Anwar confirmed that US President Donald Trump will attend the summit, following a recent phone call where Trump expressed his commitment. The summit is also expected to host leaders from Italy, Canada, South Africa, Brazil, and possibly the United States.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had earlier hinted that Trump might attend the event.
