Crowd Chaos At South Korean Embassy Event In Islamabad Triggers Confusion And Backlash

Date:

A South Korean cultural festival organised by the South Korean Embassy in Pakistan has sparked widespread criticism after large crowds were reportedly turned away from the venue, with some attendees claiming they were told the event had been cancelled upon arrival.

The “K-Wave Festa”, held on May 2 at a luxury hotel in Islamabad, was intended to showcase South Korean food, beauty products and cultural performances, including a K-pop segment featuring local amateur dancers. The event was open to the public and had been heavily promoted online in the lead-up.

However, confusion broke out at the venue when visitors said security personnel and police informed them the event would not be proceeding, despite the programme allegedly still being scheduled. Some attendees expressed anger after travelling from different cities, only to be denied entry at the gates.

Many visitors criticised what they described as poor crowd management, with some claiming the turnout far exceeded expectations. The situation highlighted broader challenges often faced in large-scale public cultural events, particularly when demand significantly outpaces logistical planning and venue capacity.

One visitor, Hajra Ijaz, said people were left frustrated and disappointed after being stopped outside the venue. She alleged that misinformation was communicated at the entrance, contributing to confusion among the crowd gathered outside the hotel.

Social media users also shared similar experiences, with some posts claiming that the event was “cancelled” due to mismanagement. Others argued that better planning should have been in place, especially given the scale of promotional activity and public interest generated prior to the event.

The South Korean Embassy, however, denied informing the public that the event had been cancelled. An embassy official said the hotel had restricted entry after attendance exceeded capacity limits, and insisted that the programme itself was not officially called off.

The official added that more than 15,000 people reportedly attended or attempted to attend the event, far beyond what the venue could accommodate. Riot police were eventually deployed to manage the situation and prevent further safety risks, while weather disruptions also forced parts of the programme indoors.
