DAP Calls For Laws To Guarantee Equal Allocations For All MPs

Date:

DAP is calling on the government to introduce legislation guaranteeing fair constituency allocations to all Members of Parliament, regardless of their political affiliations.

DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo said such a law would remove political discretion from the allocation process, while improving transparency and permanently protecting the rights of voters across the country.

The Damansara MP said the move would also fulfil Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) election pledge to ensure equitable Constituency Development Funds (CDF) for all MPs.

“DAP remains committed to PH’s election promise of ensuring fair Constituency Development Funds for all Members of Parliament.

“We have repeatedly raised this matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and hope he will take the necessary steps to implement it as soon as possible,” he said in a statement.

Gobind, who is also Digital Minister, stressed that the principle was important because withholding fair allocations could affect the democratic mandate of elected representatives.

“Voters in every parliamentary constituency should not be discriminated against simply because of their political choices or affiliations,” he said.

Anwar had previously announced an additional RM1 million allocation for every parliamentary constituency nationwide during his speech at the PKR congress at the Melaka International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITC), with the funds to be channelled directly for the benefit of the people.

The Prime Minister also said government assistance would not be distributed based on the political leanings of any constituency, rejecting claims that development allocations were being denied to opposition-led states.

Gobind welcomed the additional allocation, saying it would provide useful support, but argued that it did not resolve the broader issue of ensuring fair and non-discriminatory allocations for all MPs.

He urged the government to first ensure equal allocations for every MP before introducing permanent legislation to guarantee fair constituency funding nationwide.

“Next, legislation should be enacted to permanently guarantee fair constituency allocations for every Member of Parliament in Malaysia,” he said.
