The Department of Environment (DOE) has launched i-Payment, a new online system for paying environmental compounds, in collaboration with the Accountant General’s Department.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said the system was introduced as part of efforts to digitalise public services and make it easier for the public to comply with environmental laws.
“Digitalisation is not merely about moving services from counters to online platforms. It is about making government services more accessible, efficient and responsive to the people’s needs,” he said yesterday.
Arthur said i-Payment would complement the DOE’s enforcement efforts by providing a simpler way for offenders to settle compounds while maintaining the focus on compliance with environmental regulations.
In conjunction with this year’s National Environment Day, the government is offering a RM100 reduction on each compound paid through i-Payment until Nov 30, subject to the applicable terms and conditions.
From Dec 1, all DOE compound payments will be made exclusively through the i-Payment system.
Meanwhile, Arthur said the ministry would also place greater emphasis on environmental education to raise awareness from an early age.
He said the Sustainable Schools Environmental Award programme would be strengthened to promote sustainability through community participation, responsible resource management and environmentally friendly practices.
“This approach is important in developing a generation with the knowledge and awareness to protect the environment, while encouraging sustainable practices in everyday life,” he said.
Arthur added that environmental education needed continuous support from parents, educators, communities and other stakeholders to ensure sustainability values taught in schools extended into homes and wider society.
He said promoting sustainability through education would also complement enforcement and pollution prevention efforts by encouraging long-term changes in public attitudes and behaviour.
