Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has urged Sarawakians to take pride in their heritage, saying that no matter where life takes them, they will always remain anak Sarawak.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony for the 722 Walk held in conjunction with Sarawak Day 2026 at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Boulevard on Tuesday, Dr Sim said a person’s place of birth is a lifelong identity that cannot be changed.
“I always tell people that once you’re anak Sarawak, you are forever anak Sarawak,” he said.
He explained that even if a Sarawakian emigrates to another country and becomes an Australian or British citizen, their passport will still list Sarawak as their place of birth.
“One day, even if you move to Australia and obtain an Australian passport, what is your place of birth? Sarawak.
“If you choose to live in the United Kingdom and get a British passport, what is your place of birth? Sarawak.
“You cannot say ‘unknown’. If your place of birth is listed as unknown, the passport office will ask you to go home. How can your place of birth be unknown? That’s why you are forever anak Sarawak,” he said.
Dr Sim noted that Sarawak Day was gazetted as a public holiday in 2016 by the late former Chief Minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, giving Sarawakians the opportunity to celebrate the state’s history, identity and achievements.
He said the annual celebration is not only a reminder of Sarawak’s journey towards self-government but also a reflection of the unity and diversity that have shaped the state.
At the same time, Dr Sim encouraged Sarawakians not to take the occasion for granted and urged them to maintain a healthy lifestyle for the continued well-being and development of the state.
“When you are healthy, Sarawak is healthy. If you are sick, Sarawak also has to look after you,” he said.
He added that the Sarawak flag represents the pride, identity and spirit of anak Sarawak, including those living overseas who continue to maintain strong ties with their homeland.
Meanwhile, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said Sarawak Day serves as an important reminder of the state’s self-government journey and the need to continue safeguarding Sarawak’s rights while improving governance and public services.
He stressed that unity remains Sarawak’s greatest strength and called on all Sarawakians to uphold the spirit of “Segulai Sejalai” as they work together towards a stronger, more united and prosperous future.
