A total of 14 investigation papers related to election offences have been opened during the campaigning period for the 16th Negri Sembilan state election as of yesterday.
Negri Sembilan police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said three of the investigation papers were opened yesterday involving offences under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which relates to committing mischief by fire resulting in loss or damage to property.
He said two other investigation papers were opened under Section 427 of the Penal Code, involving acts of mischief that caused loss or damage to property.
According to Alzafny, the latest cases involved two police reports in Gemas, Tampin, linked to incidents where party flags were allegedly burned and banners were damaged.
Another report was received in Titi, Jelebu, involving an election billboard that was allegedly torn and vandalised.
“From July 18 to July 25, the Negri Sembilan Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) received a total of 28 reports related to election offences,” he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Alzafny said 94 out of 95 applications for permits to organise talks and campaign activities were approved yesterday, bringing the total number of approved permits to 416.
He said police would continue strengthening their preparedness, monitoring and enforcement throughout the campaign period, adding that firm action would be taken against any violations of the law.
Alzafny also urged the public to respect the democratic process and cooperate with PDRM to ensure the election is conducted peacefully, safely and in an orderly manner.
Early voting for the Negri Sembilan state election is scheduled for Tuesday, while polling day will take place on August 1.
