Parents have been allowed to keep their children home from school if they are concerned about their health amid the haze affecting several parts of the country.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek said parents who decide not to send their children to school only need to inform the school of their decision.
“I understand parents’ concerns over the current haze situation. We hear those concerns. The health and safety of our children remain the priority in every action we take,” she said in a Facebook post today.
Fadhlina said the Education Ministry would continue monitoring Air Pollutant Index (API) readings issued by the Department of Environment (DOE), as well as the latest situation, particularly in affected areas.
She said any measures taken by the ministry would be guided by the National Haze Action Plan.
“When the API exceeds 100, all outdoor activities are stopped. When the API exceeds 200, schools are closed,” she said.
According to the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) this morning, Samarahan, Sarawak was the only area recording a very unhealthy reading, at 226.
Meanwhile, 40 areas nationwide recorded unhealthy API readings, while 24 areas were at moderate levels and two recorded good air quality.
