Indonesia Deletes Nearly 4.9 Million Social Media Accounts Belonging To Children Under 16

Date:

Nearly 4.9 million social media accounts belonging to users under the age of 16 have been removed in Indonesia under the country’s new online child protection regulations.

Director-General of Digital Space Supervision at Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital, Alexander Sabar, said the latest compliance reports showed that digital platforms had taken significant action following the implementation of the Government Regulation on Child Online Safety (PP TUNAS).

According to the reports, TikTok deleted approximately 4.1 million accounts belonging to underage users, while YouTube removed around 600,000 accounts. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and Threads, also reported deleting about 185,000 accounts.

The PP TUNAS regulation, which came into force in March, requires digital platforms operating in Indonesia to introduce age-based safety measures for users under 16. These include preventing underage users from accessing certain services and strengthening online protections for children.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, said around 200 digital platforms have submitted self-assessment reports outlining their respective risk profiles as part of the regulation’s implementation.

The submissions include social media platforms, e-commerce services, online gaming providers and entertainment platforms. Hafid said the government is currently reviewing the reports to determine each platform’s level of risk and ensure compliance with the new child safety requirements.

The regulation forms part of Indonesia’s broader efforts to strengthen online safety for children amid growing concerns over digital risks and underage access to online platforms.
