A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for former National Intelligence Service (NIS) chief Cho Tae-yong, who is under investigation in connection with former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s 2024 declaration of martial law, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The Seoul Central District Court approved the warrant on Tuesday, citing concerns that Cho might attempt to destroy evidence, Yonhap reported, quoting the presiding judge.
A special prosecutor had sought the warrant last week, accusing Cho of violating laws prohibiting political involvement and other related offenses. Prosecutors allege that Cho knew in advance of Yoon’s plan to impose martial law but failed to report it to parliament, in violation of his duties as intelligence chief.
During a hearing on Monday, Cho denied all charges, Yonhap said.
The court and the National Intelligence Service did not immediately respond to requests for comment. — Reuters
